were staying in the trip
"1)When I joined a group of 25 people travelling on an overland truck, however, it was a different matter. 2)Some were staying with the trip for six months and there would always be people with ailments."
2) means that they had been staying with the trip for sixs months when he joined them or were going to stay with the trip for sixs months?

Hi ostap77
" .. were going to stay with the trip for six months."
It doesn't suggest when any of the individual six month periods would have started - and it may be different for different people.
Hope this helps

Could it be that they were travelling for a while before he joined them?

When I was in India I met a number of people who were travelling overland from the UK and touring India and Nepal on "truck holidays". It was usual for the journey to start with a full complement of passengers, some of whom would leave at various stages, and some who would do the complete 6 month circuit. As far as I know it was unusual for people to join during the trip.
