If it weren't for Eddie I'd say no, but I can't with him sitting there, can I, so I just nod.

"How many a day?"

"About twenty."

It's more and Eddie knows it, but he doesn't give me away.

"Have you tried to give up?"

The narrator and "Eddie" are both in the same location. The narrator does not like being questioned about his smoking. so he thinks to himself that the next time he goes to the place he is, he will go by himself. Not with Eddie. Then he won't be questioned.
