the superlative degree

I am confused by the following sentence.
Why do we delete the definite article 'the' before 'most'?

(1) The scenery viewed from here is most attractive.

(2) The scenery viewed from here is the most attractive.

In (1) most means very. It's an intensifier of attractive.

In (2) the scenery viewed from here is more attractive than it is when viewed from anywhere else.
