In an effort to reduce their inventories, Italian vintners have cut prices; their wines are priced to sell and they do.
Can anyone tell me why this sentence needs to use the conjugated form "do"?
Thanks.
In that context, the verb 'sell' has been omitted, and the verb 'do' is emphatic. It means, in fact:
Singular subject: it does (in fact) [sell].
Plural subject: they do (in fact) [sell].

Gee, it's a wide area, verb tenses. If I were you, I would do an on-line search under the words "English verb tenses".
All the best,
