I need help with prescriptive grammar

I would like help from an english teacher to tell me how they feel about prescriptive grammar rules. In my paper I am writing about double negatives and would like to know what, if anything you don't like about double negatives. Do you feel that the use of double negatives is a problem? Would you correct the usage if you heard someone speaking with a double negative?
