Isn't "ageing audience" a euphemism for the elderly or the middle-aged? All audiences are actually ageing, even children. They're getting older all the time. I'd recommend something like
the significance of television to audiences aged 45-60.
I agree that "meaning" is usually used more narrowly, such as the meaning of a given sign in a certain context. Significance is used in academic work for broader contexts.
