    Default Hope + were

"London, I hope you were worth the effort."

The above sentence, posted by a friend of mine on Facebook, struck me as odd. It's meant to express that his working hard to save up money for a trip to London will pay off. However, "hope" refers to the future and "were" to the past, so I don't think you can combine them as above. What do you think?

    Thanks!

As it stands, the sentence is meaningless.

From what you say, your friend should have written, "I hope it is/will be/will have been worth the effort".

You can hope that something happened in the past:

So, you spent your life's savings on that trip to Australia. I hope it was worth it.

Actually, the sentence is perfectly possible:

A: My husband fought a duel to the death with ten suitors in order to gain my hand in marriage.
B: Well, I hope you were worth the effort!

, but would certainly not have the intended meaning.
