"Smilies" should be formally recognised in the cannon of English language (grammer). If you agree with the statement what should the rules of use be?

Smilies should be recognised withing certain contexts- they are not appropriate for all types of writing- I don't see how they fit into formal writing, but they have a role to play in a lot of electronic communication and should get their due recognition.
