Hello,
I'm wondering if the verb 'give up' collocates with 'school' and 'university'. I got few google hits, which makes me think it's not a common collocation
Thank you.
Hi, Birdeen.
I ran through the results and found out there were few hits with the word combination. There were 'give up studies' and 'give up on school' and other variations. Besides, my collocations dictionary doesn't list it. I used the expression the other day; now I'm wondering if it was natural.
When you use quotes, all results returned contain the exact phrase. I got 23 million.
Join the club, I get 21 900 000 matches of 'give up school'. You should trust it(even if all 22 millions don't speak correctly, which is hardly believed in, they will understand you at ease).
Yours sincerely, Alex.
I am not a fan of google for making judgements on the acceptability of language. I have just got 160 million hits for I ain't done nothing.
I am happy to rely on my own judgement with give up school/university. They are fine.
That means it's acceptable to a specific linguistic community. You can't do anything about that.
