When did the "went missing" verbage get started? Why did it get started? What is wrong with the word "lost"?
Grammatically, how can one say that the wording "went missing" is correct?
Please help me understand. Thank you for your consideration.

I don't think it's necessarily an empty phrase- if my dog slips out of the garden and always comes back, might he not have gone missing rather than be lost? It could also be a euphemism for 'stolen'. However, it could also be an empty phrase.![]()
