Dear All,
I have a query about the word "protection" here:
We call the Department for preventing fire and rescure everything from fire "Fire Protection Department", right?
Why we use the word "protection" here. it's just like we protect for the fire instead of preventing and fighting it.
Can we use "Fire prevention and fighting Department" parallelly?
And when we want to say about a club operating for preventing and fighting to crime, can we use "Crime protection club"? or we use "Crime preventing & fighting club"?
Hope to get explaination from you. Tks.
I've only ever met the word 'protection' in the context of fire in the collocation 'protection racket'.
b
Fire Department - in the US.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
Thank you all.
So next time, I will use "Fire Department" / "Fire Service" / "Deparment for protection against fire"
And "Club for protection against criminal" / "Criminal preventing & fighting club".

The first of these is unnatural, the second very unnatural.
We might say "Crime Prevention Association/Club".
There are organisations called "Crimewatch" or Neighborhood watch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
I forget this: National Fire Protection Association is the name of an organization about preventing and fhighting fire.
The NFPA doesn't actually prevent or fight any fires themselves, as such.
See Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...n_Association:
"The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is a U.S. organization (albeit with some international members) charged with creating and maintaining minimum standards and requirements for fire prevention and suppression activities, training, and equipment, as well as other life-safety codes and standards. This includes everything from building codes to the personal protective equipment utilized by firefighters while extinguishing a blaze."
Basically, it sets guidelines for others to follow.
Hope this helps
