Hi. I have a pretty simple question about quoting. As an example, let's say a novel said, "He then said, 'James and I are great friends.' " Now, here's my question: If I wanted to quote only James and I are great friends would I use single or double quotes? so, for example, if I were analyzing a character... Evidence for their friendship can be seen when Mike says, "James and I are great friends" vs. Evidence for their friendship can be seen when Mike says, 'James and I are great friends.' Thanks!
(My confusion is basically that I'm solely quoting dialogue from a novel--the dialogue would be in double quotes in the novel, so I'm unsure if I would make it single when I quote it)
"James and I are great friends", are Mike's exact words, so double quotation marks are required.
