I think this sentence needs a verb that should be more common:
On the conference, Mary couldn't speek English very well but ....
she meant her idea OR she sent her idea OR transfered her idea or something else?

"Mary can't speak English very well, but at the conference she got her idea across."
Look up the phrasal verb "to get across".
