    Default alleviate (v)

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the verb in bold in the following sentence?

However, anchored as we were, we told ourselves stories to alleviate the boredom.

alleviate = allay, diminish, lessen, moderate

    V.
