Should I use IS or WAS in this sentence?


"My number on the sheet you handed out to the class is/was incorrect"

Mainly I'd like to know if it's OK to use IS, since the number was incorrect then and is incorrect now when I'm speaking. I don't know whether this kind of inconsistency(?) of tense is acceptable.

If your number is fixed and should be the same on all sheets, then you can use is. e.g. My date of birth which was written in the form is incorrect.

If you use a different number on different occasions, then you should use was to refer to that sheet which was handed(past tense) out to the class.
