Default Use of the word "and" more than once in sentences.

Hello,
Two (associated ?), questions. Is it grammatically correct and/or acceptable to use the word "and" more than once in a sentence?
The reason I have said 'associated' is that I have been taught never to start a sentence with a conjunction, in this case, "and". But if the sentence is intended to join two phrases or clauses, then the word "and" can appear in the sentence more than once.
I hope a long running debate can be brought to a satisfactory close.
Many thanks. Ian Mathieson.

Do you realise that you have just started a sentence with a conjunction?
I have been taught exactly the same as you have, but, to be honest, I have come across countless sentences using much more than one "and" and also quite a few which started off with "conjunctions", and that includes official documents! (BTW, I have deliberately used two "ands" in this sentence.)
