Default extend and expand

Dear Sir/Madame,
Could you please explain to me the difference in meaning and of use of these two words. Thank you in advance

If you extend something, you make it longer- you can extend a period of time, or a road, say. Expanding is getting bigger in all dimensions, IMO.
