    In classical contexts civilized peoples were called this in contrast to "barbarian" peoples.

    Could we add "like" before "this" or "way" after it (then probably "in" preceding both "this" and "way" is needed)?

    If it's a choice only between the two, I would have to go with "this way" (or "that way"), but you could also consider "called as such".
