    Default plant (v)

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

    The Seeker was planted on the sidewalk next to my open trunk, assailing me with snide questions and comments whenever I was in hearing distance.

    They persisted in planting themselves in some safe nook.

    plant = lodge, locate, situate

    They planted their field with rye.

    plant = sow

    Whatever planted that idea in / into your head?

    plant in an idea = suggest an idea

    I didn't steal these jewels, they've been planted on me.

    plant on = toss a piece of evidence

    She planted him once and forever.

    plant someone = leave someone

    V.

    Default Re: plant (v)

    For the first case, it would mean to 'place' or rather 'set somewhere firmly' (like on the ground). Similarly, the same 'planted' can also mean to be stationed somewhere'.

    Second case - yes, it means to place or set the seeds for growing purpose.

    Third case- Would mean that something was placed secretly/ deceptively so later it is discovered and somebody else blamed for it.

    Last one- I am not sure for that..... Surely some teacher would explain in a better way!

    Hope it helps - I'm not a teacher!
