I know that this may sound kind of old fashion, but would either one of these sentences be correct in saying?
1. The look on his face suddenly looks like that of a scared little boy.
2. The look on his face suddenly looks that of a scared little boy.
Do these senteneces really sound old-fashioned?

The main problem, to me, is the use of "The look ... looks ...", which I assume is partly what made bhai call them clumsy.
Similarly clumsy are: "The smell of the cooking dinner smelt/smelled inviting."; "The sound of the jazz music sounded relaxing."
