    Default "that oft"

I know that this may sound kind of old fashion, but would either one of these sentences be correct in saying?

    1. The look on his face suddenly looks like that of a scared little boy.

    2. The look on his face suddenly looks that of a scared little boy.

They are both a bit clumsy and unnatural. Try:
"The look on his face is suddenly that of a scared little boy".
Or, "Suddenly, the look on his face is that of a scared little boy"

    Note amendments above.

I agree with bhaisahab as far as the actual answer goes.

I find the first one all right.

I wouldn't call them "old fashioned", a bit "literary" perhaps.

The main problem, to me, is the use of "The look ... looks ...", which I assume is partly what made bhai call them clumsy.
Similarly clumsy are: "The smell of the cooking dinner smelt/smelled inviting."; "The sound of the jazz music sounded relaxing."
