They are both a bit clumsy and unnatural. Try:
"The look on his face is suddenly that of a scared little boy".
Or, "Suddenly, the look on his face is that of a scared little boy"

I wouldn't call them "old fashioned", a bit "literary" perhaps.

The main problem, to me, is the use of "The look ... looks ...", which I assume is partly what made bhai call them clumsy.
Similarly clumsy are: "The smell of the cooking dinner smelt/smelled inviting."; "The sound of the jazz music sounded relaxing."
