Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the words in bold in the following sentences?
They went on a long hike.
hike = a walk usually for exercise or pleasure
University tuition fee hike will hit 100,000 of this year's unlucky students.
hike (n) = an often abrupt increase or rise/ an increase in cost
He hiked himself onto the top bunk.
"The landlord hiked up the rents"
hike (v) = increase

All OK except for 'He hiked himself onto the top bunk'.
'He climbed (up) onto the top bunk.'

I think that usage may be fairly acceptable in AmE.
