    I would like to know if the word initialism is used to explain abbreviations such as US or CD

    Yes it is, apparently, though it's not a word I was previously familiar with.

    Well, it seems is not a common term as I thought, so I would use the concept abbreviation.

    Have not found an expression in Spanish just the word Sigla
