Actually, I thought of that before but it seemed kind of awkward then.

Now you write it, it suddenly looks fine.


Also, I can sense from your reply that trying to combine the two is not such a good idea and I kind of get it but the thing is that it's not my expression. I am merely trying to tranlate someone else's sentence into English so I have to make it look as similiar as possible to the original version in its structure. I don't have much leeway to move words around or split ideas into two sentences as I please.

'There's been a growing interest in sports welfare and an increasing amount of research on the subject'.

(Amount of research is more idiomatic than number of researches.)
