Default to take up with people

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

How could you possibly know what kind of people he would be taking up with and they telling him nonsense and wickedness. (John Steinbeck, "Cup of Gold")

to take up with people = to intimate with people
