Default the ice was getting pretty thin

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

It appeared to me that the ice was getting pretty thin here.

the ice was getting pretty thin = the situation was becoming very risky

It could be that, but if they're skating, it could be literal. It's hard without more context to say exactly.
