Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

The trucks ground up and away heading out of it all and the peasants plodded along in the ankle deep dust. (Ernst Hemingway, “Old Man at the Bridge”)

heading out of it all = directed away from the whole scene

That sort of thing- leaving the area/scene
