Ernie, an old man is talking to his dead friend RAT, praising him for his teaching during childhood. Is "laugh at yourself" ridicule or make fun of yourself or laugh heartily in a joyful way? Is it negative or positive?

Ernie- when i was out on the road and i'd think back on all
the things you taught me. Not book things. Like how to survive and laugh at yourself.
It's good advice to not take yourself too seriously. If you make mistakes, and can laugh at them and carry on, you will have less stress and less regrets. (Learn from them, sure, but don't wallow in them.)
You don't have to laugh heartily - or even out loud. Just don't take it too seiously.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
I wonder what Spanish students do with this, as the verb for 'to laugh' is already reflexive - reirse. Interesting... well, quite...
