I think "1" does not work but "3" does. In "3" "like a wedding gown coverd with jewels" seems to have been added on as an afterthought. Thus if the idea had been expressed completely from the start we would have had "a wonderful dress like a wedding gown coverd with jewels". But "his mansion" is already "defined" and cannot be followed by a defining relative clause...
