    Smile it or that

    Hello,

I've just found myself saying ' Is that really true that he had ten cats when he was a child?'

Is it appropriate to use that in the highlighted place,or I can use only 'it'.

    Thank you very much,
    heyt

    Use "it."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

I agree with BarbD specifically for your context. However:

He had ten cats when he was a child?
    Wow. Is that true?!

And I agree with ems that in other contexts, it does work as "that."

Do you know the children's books about Oliva, the pig? Olivia can sometimes stretch the truth. I"m pretty sure in Olivia, Queen of the Circus that her teacher says "Is that true?"
