    Default past tense in a past event

    Suppose a teacher is being asked about her students:
    Have you had a student that (was/has been/had been) rude to you?
    What would be the correct tense for the underlined section?

    "has been" would be right in most contexts. "had been" is not right. "was" works in some contexts.
