Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?
On the following morning, as I held my consultation in the surgery, adjoining my cabin, the quartermaster, Hasan appeared bringing with him two of his Indian deck hands. (A. J. Cronin, “The Indian Quartermaster”)
deck hands = men employed on a ship to clean it and do different jobs, sailors
But the quartermaster calm gave me fresh heart. (A. J. Cronin, “The Indian Quartermaster”)
he gave me fresh heart = he gave me new courage
