Hi forum!

A grammar question:

I (subject) go (verb) swimming (?).

When you ad "ing" to a verb, it can become a subject.

Swimming (subject) is (verb) fun (adjective).

Sometimes you have to do it when a preposition is given before the verb.

I (subject) am (aux) looking (verb in progressive) forward (adverb) to (prep) seeing (?)you (object).

As long as you don't distinguish between words as language units and words as speech units you will have this mess. 'The Subject' is a sentence constituent, a speech unit. 'The Verb' is a morphological class of words, a language unit.

Swimming is fun.
Swimming is a gerund, it is used as subject in the sentence.
Fun is a noun, it is used as part of a compound nominal predicate.

Do you know an internet page where this is explained a little closer (with more examples)? My grammar books don't really contain word structure.
