    Default More/much

    Dear all,

Why use "there was" not "there were" i the sentence below and when do I use There "was/were"?

And my second question is that why use "more" not "much turmoil" ?
    thank you very much.

"There was more turmoil in Brazil’s government,"

    Sincerely,

'There was much turmoil in Brazil's government' would be the correct form.

'There was' because turmoil is a singular noun and 'much' because more would need to relate to a comparison.

    1. 'Turmoil' is not plural.
    2. We use 'there was' if we have a singular or uncountable noun, 'there were' if we have a plural noun.

And my second third question is that why do we use "more" not "much turmoil" ?
    3. Because there has presumably been some turmoil already.

"There was more turmoil in Brazil’s government,",
