    Default taking (a) salary

    New York Time

When asked if he would stop taking salary during the lockout, as Goodenow has said he would, Bettman replied: "That's not anything worth considering."
Could "taking salary" be a print error, since "salary" is countable?

I'm not sure it's a print error. Some nouns, of course, can be both countable and uncountable. I would place "salary" in the countable category, but sometimes (many times) journalists take liberties. Also I think "salary" is one of those words where the average/native AmE reader would not consider it wrong in that instance.

No, this is the correct usage ("taking salary").

So, "taking a salary" would have been wrong?

I think it's far more natural with the "a."

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

I was tossing up between "taking a salary" and "taking his salary" too. I think they both sound fine though my first instinct would have been "a". I certainly think "taking salary" sounds very unnatural.

I think I'd use 'his', but 'a' sounds natural. I am with billmcd - I don't consider no article to be wrong in that sentence.
