    Default free lance

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

I’m not under order. .. I’m free lance. I’m in this to enjoy myself and I’m going to enjoy myself. (A. Christie, ”N or M”)

free lance = not regularly appointment journalist, ……

One could also be a free lance writer or a free lance plumber. Free lance means one who is not employed by a person or company. Consider the knight of old. He could either be in the hire of a certain king or he could be a free lance - his lance (weapon) was for hire to the highest bidder.

With 2,583 COCA sentences containing 'freelance', 783 containg 'free-lance', and only 25 containing 'free lance', most of us do.

Should that first example with 2,583 examples be "freelance" (all one word)?

I won't mention the spelling of "containing" in the middle of the three examples then! Sleep well!
