Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

Little twittery birds fly by once in a while, sound of a plane in the distance, and always the constant low roar of traffic from the freeway.

The low growl of beltway traffic is never far off.

low growl = low roar

Montmorency would growl and back at a rapid pace.

He growled a few words to us. He growled that he would late.

growl = snarl, gnar

back = go or cause to go backwards
