She managed to hold her emotions back when she was told of her husband’s death.
To my deep gratification, the English teachers were kind and considerate to me lately.

Thank you for your amendment. You are perfectly right. That was a careless mistake.
At first, I have the intention using the adverb always which calls for usage of the mentioned wrong tense. Subsequently I chose lately because I have to take account to realities. The usage of always would be going too far.
