I get the feeling that your use of the adverb "lately" should throw the verb into the

present perfect:

The English teachers have been very kind to and considerate of me lately.

Thank you for your amendment. You are perfectly right. That was a careless mistake.

At first, I have the intention using the adverb always which calls for usage of the mentioned wrong tense. Subsequently I chose lately because I have to take account to realities. The usage of always would be going too far.
