What is the difference between wage and salary?

Is it so important to call the same thing two diffenent names?

The difference between a wage-earner and a salaried employee, generally speaking, has to do with prestige, but it also concerns payment arrangements. The pay for wage-earners is usually calculated on an hourly basis, while the salaried employee usually signs a yearlong contract.
