According to most dictionaries, "carry through" means "continue to exist". Is it reasonable to think that in the underlined part, a proposition is missing between "carry through" and "his hockey career"?

I don't think so. The sentence did not sound unnatural to me when I first read it. We could say 'A pattern which continued his whole hockey career'. The underlined words do not have to have a preposition before them.
