I'm not sure. I've given up on answering sports commentating questions. Apparently you can say pretty much what you like.

Quite possibly. I think I've heard "the rout is starting" etc in the days when I used to watch football/American football/gridiron (choose your title!) so I guess you could say "the rout is on" or "the rout will be on".

It's not usage I'm familiar with. I'd say "It's going to be a rout" but not "the route is on."

"The rout is on" is common in the football world I know. Like, "The Hawks were leading by 2 touchdowns at halftime. They scored to begin the second half, then returned an interception for a TD on the next play and the rout was on."
