Talking about a film, a concert, a dinner, can I say: How was it? or do I have to say "What was it like?".

If I would ask, "How was it?", I would expect a short answer e.g. "It was great" OR "I didn't like it" with possibly some additional comment. If I would ask "What was it like"?, I would expect some description of the event.
