    Default stay/ remain

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to share with me your considered opinion concerning the usage of stayand remain in the following sentences?

    I will always stay with you, I shall never leave you.

    How could you remain with him and keep your self-respect?

    The weather stayed fine.

    The weather remained fine.

    He stayed awake all night.

    He remained awake all night.

    but:

    He stayed thus for several minutes.

    He prefers to remain unknown.

    These linen won’t stay white.

    She took care that the house always stayed clean.

    The stuff remained liquid.

    The weather remained cold.

    The food remained untouched.
