    Default wreathd vs garland

I can't get the difference in meaning between a wreath and a garland. Would there be any subtlety in meaning? Can I put both things at the foot of a monument?

A wreath is always circular, a garland may be, but doesn't have to be. All wreaths are garlands, but not all garlands are wreaths. That's the understanding of this AE native speaker.

If they a garland is circular, it's interchangeable in meaning with a wreath?
