Default another word for "current"

Hi, could anyone tell me any other word that would be similar in meaning to "current" in this sentence:
I can only pray and hope that these unruly currents will weaken with time. I cannot help feeling that way now, but I hope to become free of them."
Thanks

Default Re: another word for "current"

Here the writer is using currents, as in ocean currents, as a metaphor for events, trends or forces that cannot be controlled. It is a good metaphor, but can be replaced by more direct speech that refers to the thing worrying the speaker. A different, but similar metaphor such as tides or winds might not be as effective.
