when to use did

Dear Teacher,


I have a doubt regarding the use of 'did' and I could you can help me. In the two sentences below could you please explain me which one of them is correct? I think both are correct but I am not sure what is the difference or if with certain verbs you are not suppose to use did?

Who won the game? or Who did win the game?

The normal was to ask this is "Who won the game?"

You could use the "did' version if you want to be emphatic.

Did Mary win the game?
No.
Did Jim win the game?
No.
Oh, so Pat won the game.
No, not Pat either.
Okay, I give up! So who DID win the game?

It's possible. "You should do your homework every day" "I do do my homework every day", for example.

Therefore, we can emphasize in simple present tense sentence by using does or do and simple past tense sentence by using did.

How about other tenses, is there any same pattern for other tenses?

The present and past simple are the only tense forms in English that do not require an auxiliary in the affirmative; we use DO as an auxiliary for stress. In all other tense forms we place the emphasis on the auxiliary that is already there.
