    Default wonder vs wondering

"The disorderd consulting room got him wondering if he actually came to the right place."

I've been told that there are two mistakes in this sentence. First is that I ought to have written "got him wonder......." and the second one is that the past perfect should have been use after "if he had come to the right place." Is it so?

Would it be acceptable not to back-shift to the past perfect in the if-clause?

The past perfect is preferred in that context. The past tense is not wrong though, I think.
