I am very appreciative of and interested in your problem. Its significance lies in the "origin " of phrasal verbs which I am looking for all my life. As a teacher of English we should think of how to help students remember such phrasal verbs which are great trouble to them ,including us.

This is a guess, but I would think it comes from playing cards. When you turn a card up (face up), you have revealed that card.
