OED: a right-angled support attached to and projecting from a wall for holding a shelf, lamp, or other object.
What is that exactly?
What is a right-angled support?
Dave showed you pictures of actual brackets; here is how they are used to support a shelf. As you probably know, a right angle is an angle of 90 degrees. In this case, the long side of the metal bracket is affixed to the wall, thus leaving the other side jutting out straight from the wall. This part of the bracket is used to support shelves or lamps or other objects.
Interesting. I have seen them before but I wasn't sure what their name was in English.
Actually, I didn't know what a right angle was, I had to google it, then of course I knew what it was. The problem I am having is that, even though my English level is high, its full of holes like these. My current strategy is reading and adding new vocabulary / idioms to my knowledge database, however, I am thinking about getting some basic 4th grade or so level books and quickly re-learn everything I already studied at elementary school, but in English of course.
What do you think?
You would know what it is if you are a home handyman or involved in construction.
Mind you, that is one only of the many types of brackets and it is for domestic use.
There are many other types of brackets used in construction.

It is impossible to know all unless you are involved in the field.
