Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

I had planned to go to Switzerland with some friends for my holiday, but I’ve had to put it off owing to this new work at the office. It has absolutely messed up the whole contract.

mess up a contract = confuse things, confuse the issues, be in embarrassed circumstances, get into a muddle
