use of the article "the"

in the sentence, "____ Indus is the longest river of Pakistan", i feel no article should come before "Indus", since its already very specific. but the rules of placing articles suggest otherwise.

Please use capitals to start questions and for 'I'.
You need to use "the" for rivers. There's no good explanation. It's what we do.
